    Clean and "Fully Functional" ingredients

What is the Difference Between “Healthy” and “Healthier?”

At The Cookie Department, we often get asked – are your cookies healthy? So, we wanted to answer this question in today’s blog post.

At the end of the day, our soft-baked cookies are just that, cookies. But what sets our cookies apart from the fold is that we use clean and functional ingredients that are known to benefit the body. For example, while we use brown sugar in our recipes, we also use date paste to help increase the sweet factor without relying solely on sugar.

Our cookies are soft and chewy and completely decadent, so they can’t realistically be considered “healthy,” but if you’re craving the satisfying taste of a delicious cookie, we can say that our cookies are certainly healthier than the competition. It all comes down to the ingredients we use and here’s why.

Comparing Our Chocolate Chip Nookie Cookie

Our Chocolate Chip Nookie Cookie is one of our most popular flavors. And why not? Everybody loves a soft, chewy chocolate chip cookie that’s loaded with chocolate chips, right? But let’s compare our recipe with a leading manufacturer of chocolate chip cookies.

Leading Brand Ingredients: Unbleached enriched flour (wheat flour, niacin, reduced iron, thiamine mononitrate {vitamin b1}, riboflavin {vitamin b2}, folic acid), semisweet chocolate chips (sugar, chocolate, cocoa butter, dextrose, soy lecithin), sugar, soybean oil, partially hydrogenated cotton seed oil, high fructose corn syrup, leavening ( baking soda and /or ammonium phosphate), salt, whey (from milk ), natural and artificial flavor, caramel color.

Chocolate Chip Nookie Ingredients: Wheat flour, Enriched (wheat flour, malted, niacin, reduced iron, riboflavin, folic acid), semisweet chips (sugar, chocolate liquor, cocoa butter, soy lecithin), brown sugar, high oleic sunflower oil, algae butter, butter (cream, salt), water, date paste, evaporated cane sugar, invert sugar (dextrose, fructose), moisturlok (made from fruit juice and grain), eggs, maca powder, vanilla, sea salt, baking soda, baking powder.

As you can see, there are some similar base ingredients in both cookies. But each cookie has several ingredients that the other does not.

The leading brand uses standard soybean oil, while The Cookie Department uses high oleic sunflower oil, which is a fat that is recognized as being equally as healthy as the fat in avocados. High oleic sunflower oil promotes healthy cholesterol levels and helps lower your risk of coronary heart disease.

The leading brand also uses high fructose corn syrup in its recipe, and there is a long list of potential health issues stemming from its use. The Cookie Department doesn’t use high fructose corn syrup. Instead, we sweeten our cookies with brown sugar, date paste, and evaporated cane sugar.

Our cookies also feature algae butter and maca powder, which the leading brand does not. Algae butter not only produces better baked goods, it has 50% less saturated fat compared to butter. Because algae butter is plant-based, it is also a cleaner option and the most sustainable fat source in the world. Meanwhile, maca powder delivers a host of health-improving benefits. It boosts energy and endurance, eases anxiety and depression, reduces blood pressure, fights free radicals, improves learning and memory, and more.

Choose the Cookie that Works for You

When you’re in the mood for a cookie, isn’t it better to choose a cookie that can satisfy your cravings while providing your body with clean, functional ingredients instead of ingredients that are known to be harmful to your health?

At The Cookie Department, we can’t outright say that our cookies are “healthy” for you to eat. But they are the “healthier” option when you compare them against every other cookie on the market. Try one of our delicious soft baked cookies and taste the difference clean ingredients make. Place your order today and we’re confident you’ll keep coming back for more!

    What Makes Our Cookies Functional?

    What Makes Our Cookies Functional?

What is a Fully Functional Cookie?

If you were asked to think of one or two snacks that have the potential to be good for you, odds are cookies wouldn’t cross your mind! But at The Cookie Department, we have made the impossible possible BY creating a whole line of Fully Functional cookies! But what does the term “Fully Functional” mean?

It boils down to the functional ingredients we use in our recipes which are known for their unique health-promoting properties. So our decadent soft-baked, melt- in- your- mouth cookies are loaded with beneficial ingredients!

Here is a list of some of the ingredients that make our cookies not only delicious, but Fully Functional as well.

    About Our Ingredients

    Fair Trade Coffee Beans

At The Cookie Department, we are all about using ingredients that are good for the body and good for the planet. This is why we use only fair trade coffee beans in our recipes. Fair trade coffee supports environmental sustainability and the local communities and farmers that harvest the beans. It also tastes better and is better for your health. This coffee is grown slowly in rich, nutrient-dense soil and without fertilizers or pesticides. The nutrients in the soil are absorbed by the beans and forwarded to you.

    rBST-Free Whey Protein

Our cookies are made with rBST-Free Whey Protein. This classification means that the whey protein is grown organically, using ethically treated cow’s milk sources. The milk used in our recipes comes from cows that have not been injected with bovine somatotropin, so you never have to worry about involuntarily ingesting artificial growth hormones with our cookies.

    Cayenne Pepper

Cayenne pepper contains an ingredient called capsaicin, which is not only responsible for the pepper’s heat, but also its medicinal properties. Cayenne pepper provides plenty of health benefits. It has been shown to accelerate the metabolism, reduce hunger, lower blood pressure, aid in digestion, relieve pain, reduce cancer risks, improve psoriasis, and more.

    Sweet Potatoes

Sweet potatoes help keep our cookies moist, but that’s not the only reason we include them in our recipes. They are also high in fiber and packed with vitamins and minerals. For example, sweet potatoes are naturally high in Vitamin A, which is an important vitamin for protecting against lung cancer. They’re also high in antioxidants that can improve eye health and have been shown to help manage type 2 diabetes.

    Oats

Oats make our cookies super-satisfying because they are an excellent source of fiber and protein, but besides that, they also bring a lot of vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants to the table. Oats are among the most nutrient-dense foods you can eat. They can help you lower your cholesterol, reduce your blood sugar levels, and improve the growth of good bacteria in your gut.

    Maca Root

Maca root is a Peruvian plant that has been used for thousands of years by the Peruvians for its ability to boost energy and endurance. Maca is also high in flavonoids, which have been known to help improve anxiety and depression. According to multiple studies, Maca root has even been shown to help reduce blood pressure, fight free radicals, improve skin health, reduce menopause symptoms, improve cognition, reduce erectile dysfunction, and improve fertility and libido.

    Dates

Dates are nature’s sweetener. But in addition to their sweetness, they are also high in fiber and disease-fighting antioxidants and they contain minerals that benefit the body’s skeletal system. Dates are also known to be good for the brain, help with blood sugar management, and help ease late-term labor in pregnant women.

    High Oleic Sunflower Oil

High oleic sunflower oil is pressed from sunflowers that have been specifically bred to be high in monounsaturated fat. This is the type of fat found in olives and avocados, so it is a functional fat that promotes good brain health and memory recall. High oleic sunflower oil has also been shown to help support healthy blood cholesterol, blood sugar, and insulin levels.
